Clean water for children from IDS Group

The company IDS Group continues to support the Center for children affected by cancer Smile. The managers of the company has decided to provide our kids with clean drinking water.

It’s not a secret that water is the second most important substance for our body functioning after oxygen. Unfortunately, we cannot choose air to breathe but we have an opportunity to choose water to drink.

Thus, our children got such an opportunity: every month the Center is provided with 200 liters of the mineral water Morshynska and Myrgorodska, and the natural table water Aqua Life for preparing food.

We espress our sincere gratitude for the managers of the IDS Group for taking care of our kids! Be healthy!

For the sake of our children’s future

Love is the best feeling! When you are in love you, are eager to share your feelings with everyone. Probably, that’s why Saint Valentine’s Day gradually became Day of People who are in Love with Life – that’s the name we gave to the Childhood Cancer Day.

On February 13 our foundation held the event For the Sake of our Children’s Future in the Commercial Centre Magelan.  The program included entertainment with a clown, the Jazz Club music accompaniment and the winner of international children singing contests Kateryna Kovalchuk. Everybody could get a personal Saint Valentine’s Day congratulations in a verse form or our Sorceress Zlata’s forecast for 2010.  All the kids that came to the Magelan with their parents were happy to participate in the event organized by ZAPORUKA with its contests, games, songs, dances and, of course, presents.

Besides, we organized a souvenir fair during the event: we were selling post cards designed by the kids, magnets with Zaporuka symbol, balloons in the form of a heart given to us by the company SHAR-master and chocolate hearts prepared for us by the confectioner’s shop Repryza. All the money raised we used for redecorations of the recreation room for children at the Paediatric Clinic of the Institute of Neurosurgery.

Parents whose children had been treated at the National Institute of Cancer also participated in the event. More than 20 parents helped us to distribute the invitations to participate in our event among the Magelan visitors. Some parents taught the children to make origami. It’s so pleasant that the people to whom we helped in the past now are willing to help us.

We would like to thank everybody who helped us n our event, that is: the direction of the commercial centre Magelan and the hypermarket Kraina, the direction and the employees of confectioner’s shop Repryza, the company Jazz Club (the official representative of YAMAHA in Ukraine), the company SHAR-master

Parent Meeting

Again we invited to the Center Smile the people who got acquainted with each other in a tragic moment of their life and who struggled together for their children’s health and even life; at that time Zaporuka employees were trying to help them. The pain that those people had to face influenced their lives not in a positive way, that’s why every 2-3 months the foundation Zaporuka organizes parents’ meetings where they can communicate, support and help each other and those parents who stay at the hospital at the moment.

The current meeting took place at the commercial centre MAGELAN the day before the International Childhood Cancer Day, that’s why we invited the parents to participate in our event “In Love with Life”. After the event we went back to the Center Smile where the parents enjoyed a delicious meal and a relaxation program prepared by the Italian theatre director Giorgio.
It was very pleasant to see the parents’ happy faces and to hear their comments about the meeting.

“I’m very grateful to everybody who gathered us together, supported us, calmed us down and made us feel good. I wish you every success!” – Natalia Kyrychuk

“Kindred spirits got together at the hospitable house. Everything we did together gave us only positive emotions. We had a good rest, physically and morally. It would be good to have more such meetings that gave us positive emotions and unite us. We would like to meet more and more times. We would like to thank Zaporuka employees for their precious work. And we would like to thank Giorgio and Giampiero for giving childish emotions while playing with us” – Demyanchuk O.M., Mochulska L.V., Voronaya S.V., Motevosyan T.V., Buryak O.N., Volovnyk S.V.

Separately we would like to thank the restaurant “Pizzeria Celentano” and Yulia Volodymyrivna in person for helping in preparing the parents’ meetings.

Airlines of Ukraine is Our Winged Benefactor

Everybody has a Guarding Angel assigned to him/her when they are born. This Angel guides and protects. There is a belief: when a person does good, the Guardian Angel gives him or her the wings. And in such a case their good deeds will triplicate.

Our foundation got acquainted with its Winged Benefactor. Really winged! Having got to know about the Center for children affected by cancer Smile, the International Airlines of Ukraine decided to help. They promised to maintain the Center in 2010 paying for heating, electricity, gas, water and other services necessary for its functioning. Now the children and their families’ comfort is guaranteed.

We are very grateful to the International Airlines of Ukraine for taking care of us!

Creative Activities by VAB Bank

It’s always pleasant to receive gifts. It is even more pleasant to watch the kids opening their gifts with genuine interest. The VAB Bank, our new friend, bought creative activities sets for the children who are treated at the Institute of Cancer. Under the guidance of the ZAPORUKA teacher the children started making gypsum souvenirs – piggy banks, pictures and magnets. Volunteers helped them in the most complicated parts – to knead gypsum and fill it in forms. Further the girls and boys continued making souvenirs and coloring them on their own. The time flew very fast in the company of good friends. All of us had great fun together!

We thank the VAB Bank for consideration and care of our children!

ZAPORUKA ANNUAL REPORT 2009

Dear friends,

2009 is coming to an end. In spite of the economical crisis and other difficulties, this year turned out to be very fruitful for Zaporuka. We understood that there are no such economical problems that prevent people from helping those who are in need.

Thank to the common efforts in 2009 we have opened the Center for children affected by cancer “Smile”. There seven families with ill children live on a regular basis and the patients of the paediatric department of the Institute of Cancer come to spend their free time every day.

We have started a new project “Let’s Anticipate the Trouble”, the main aim of which is to raise the oncological awareness both among paediatricians and among parents.

Playground from Art GARDEN

Yesterday Zaporuka got a telephone call: “It’s Art Garden calling. We will bring you tomorrow an outdoor playground for your Center”. We were very happy to hear it because with swings slides and climbers our kids would have great fun. And we mean not only those children who live in the Center with their families but also those who come there almost every day from the Institute of Cancer.

When all the kids were sleeping, Sofia decided to be the first who would enjoy a new playground. Some of Zaporuka employees remembered their childhood and joined her.

The children, the parents and all the Zaporuka employees express their sincere gratitude to ART GARDEN for the gift!

Italian Restaurant Walter's Creates Holiday Fun for Children

Probably, people’s most pleasant childhood memories are connected with winter holidays. Christmas-tree decorations, hand made snowflakes, frosted windows, Saint Nicholas and Father Frost’s greetings, gifts in multi-colored boxes… Kids are waiting for all these things during the whole year. Still the most important thing for them is a holiday itself!

The children who have to stay at the hospital for months dream to go home at least during their favorite holidays. Unfortunately, it is impossible for the majority of them, they have to stay under the doctors’ supervision. However, Zaporuka created a Center where the children can feel almost at home.

Smelled like the holidays at our Center! The children were decorating a New Year tree, their parents and Zaporuka employees helped them with pleasure. The Center covered with garlands turned into a fairy tale!

We express our gratitude to the owners of the restaurant Walter’s for beautiful decorations!

Volunteers continue to help!

Recently the Zaporuka employees have got a telephone call about the parcel that had arrived from Italy. It was Chiara who had sent the so necessary medical consumables goods for the paediatric department of the Institute of Cancer: syringes, plasters, masks and other things.

It is so pleasant that the volunteers who came to our kids some time ago don’t forget about them, worry about them and continue to help!

Children and parents are very grateful for such a support!

FC Dinamo (Kiev) and FC Inter (Milan) joined the Ukrainian National Charitable Fund Zaporuka and help children affected by cancer!

You join us too!

How you can help

FC Dinamo supported us too!

The Ukrainian charitable fund Zaporuka referred to the football club Dinamo with the request to support its activities – and the club expressed its willingness to help immediately!  In particular, we agreed that agreed that during the match broadcast on TV an electronic moving text about Zaporuka would be shown and the speaker would announce it for the audience at the stadium.

Of course, at first we planed a more large scale event – that the children affected by cancer would accompany the footballers while they entered the field. However, the epidemic of influenza made this initiative impossible to accomplish in order not to expose children to danger.

We thank FC Dinamo for understanding and willingness to cooperate!

Inter helps children!

On November, 3 while Inter’s players and coaches left the airport heading for Opera Hotel, Zaporuka and Soleterre employees were waiting patiently for the club managers to receive the gifts prepared by the guests from Milan in advance.

When the footballers went away, big trunks full of food for the team, sport kits and boots and, finally, things for us appeared in the waiting hall. I have to say that Inter didn’t save on gifts – they brought three big boxes full of sport kits and gadgets with the club’s symbols: 300 sport kits for children and teenagers, soft toys, pencil cases, note books, badges etc. Meeting with children and gift giving were planned for the next day.

However, the next day the head coach Jose Mourinho didn’t let his players to go anywhere because of the important match with Dinamo. Still, Inter’s delegation consisting of the Golden Ball winner Luis Figo (after finishing his career he became Inter’s official representative in different events and actions), a sister of Inter’s President and at the same time a famous actress Bedi Moratti and Inter’s chief executive Ernesto Paolillo went to the Paediatric Clinic of Neurosurgery and to the first Ukrainian Center for children zffected by cancer and their parents.

Looking forward to the guests’ to come, the children prepared a special program for them: their own interpretation of the fairy tale “Kolobok”, gifts made by their own hands and, of course, special congratulations for Luis Figo who would celebrate his 37th birthday on the next day. The guests from Milan, in their turn, gave the children the above mentioned gifts, made pictures with them and gave autographs! Sometimes Signora Moratti couldn’t hold back a tear looking into the children’s faces…

Recently, the SMS campaign “Don’t close your eyes to cancer” has started in Italy aimed at supporting the first Ukrainian Center for children affected by cancer who undergo treatment at the National Institute of Cancer.

We express our sincere gratitude to FC Inter for their willingness to help!

Gifts from the Zhinky Batkivshyny (the Women of Motherland)

Yesterday  the  head  of  the Yulia Tymoshenko  Bloc  in  the  Shevchenko  District Valentyna Sergiivna Dzyganska with her colleagues came to our CENTER. Valentyna Sergiivna as the head of the Ukrainian public organization Zhinky Batkivshyny was present at the official inauguration of the Family House for children ill with cancer and got imbued with the problems of our House. When she found out that we gave our microwave oven to the Institute of Cancer and the parents who lived at the Family House couldn’t warm up their food, she promised to help us. And one day she came to the House with the gifts: a microwave oven and two children’s beds. Valentyna Sergiivna promised to support our House in the future and cooperate with the fund Zaporuka to help children ill with cancer.

The Zaporuka  employees,  the  parents and  the  children are  very  grateful  to  you,  dear  Valentyna Sergiivna, for your aid!

The Family House/Rehabilitation Centre for Children Ill with Cancer Officially Inaugurated on October 3, 2009

In a small village, not far from the National Institute of Cancer, the first rehabilitation center in Ukraine for the families whose children are ill with cancer was officially inaugurated. It was modeled following the best examples of the European rehabilitation centers.

The atmosphere of the inauguration day was very warm. It happened not only due to the good weather but also due to the people who gathered together on weekend to congratulate children, their parents and two foundations – Zaporuka and Soleterre – which, in spite of all the difficulties and obstacles, managed to open the Family House.

The   children   prepared   the  performance  for  the  guests TEREMOK providing analogy with their own life: how they came to Kiev for treatment and requested a place at the dormitory of the Institute of Cancer but there was no room for them because the dormitory was overcrowded, so they built a new house to live in which they called the “House of Wonders”. The guests were watching the children’s performance trying to hold back tears. Our little actors were a bit agitated but happy to play their roles. Even those kids who couldn’t walk took part in the performance: Karina was crawling like a fox and 7-year old Sasha played a part of the main character – Bear sitting on his mother’s knees. The children were treated with sweets and fruit and the café Repryza that prepared a delicious cake for the occasion.

All the employees of our foundation, the mothers and the children for whom the Rehabilitation Centre was opened express their sincere gratitude to everybody who helped to make our House comfortable!

Natalia Onipko, the president of the charitable fund Zaporuka:

“During the first two months of activities at the Centre, we understood how indispensable such an institution was! Every day we get telephone calls from parents with the request to come to the House: some of them don’t have a place to live during their child’s examinations and they have to go to the waiting hall at the railway station; some don’t have a room to stay during the radiotherapy treatment that lasts two weeks at the hospital. Besides, we call our center a Family House because our goal is to unite families who are separated for a long time since cancer treatment is quite long. For example, the family Svystun that consists of 5 persons (a mother, a father, a 2 month old brother and a grandmother) has been living in the House for 2 weeks – all of them came to support Karina who would have a very serious operation. We hope that the relatives’ support and a favourable psychological atmosphere will influence her recovery in a positive way.

We are happy to hear the children saying to their mothers that they feel at the House like at home because we have created all the conditions for it – separate cozy rooms for each family, two spacious recreation rooms, where little kids and teenagers can find games and activities to their liking, a dining room with a fire place where families can gather together and have dinner and an open terrace is warmed by the sun even in October”.

BIRTHDAY PARTIES IN THE CENTRE “HOUSE OF WONDERS”

On the third Friday of every month we organize parties in the House for the children who celebrate their birthday during the given month.

On September 25 we had such a party for the first time – we celebrated Oleksandr Barabosha’s 17th birthday. All the children who could leave the hospital for several hours got together in the magic terrace of the House where they enjoyed the entertainment program prepared for them by the clown Inna.  During a warm and sunny day the Zaporuka employees set the table with sweets and fruit, and the pizzeria Celentano prepared a delicious dinner for the children!

Two hours in the fresh air with movement games and laughs and the most interesting activity – coloring faces using special paints – distracted the children from pain and sadness and brought them pleasant emotions. There is no more happiness in the world than to see happy and smiling faces of the children, especially taking into consideration the fact that they are deprived of “a child’s life”!

To organize the next party on October 23 we need help of those people who are ready to bring happy smiles to our children’s faces:

-         entertainment program (with clowns or other fairy tales characters)

-         sweets and fruit

-         festive decorations (balloons, table and paper decoration)

-         birthday gifts

-         small gifts to the children – guests of the party

Usually 10-15 children and their parents take part in such parties.

PARENT MEETING

Everything began on a sunny morning, on September 19. People came for the parent meeting full of enthusiasm to help those who were treated at the Institute of Cancer. It was the first meeting in the newly opened Family House. So, everybody got together. Let’s go!

Everyone in the Family House was involved in the preparations. The Zaporuka employees worked diligently – they   laid a carpet for them and prepared fanfares. On coming all the guests looked round the House and the yard.  Probably, it was because twenty good farmers gathered together – and a good farmer knows that autumn is the time of gathering crops – that we decided to organize a working day.  Together we discovered a new trend in sport and psychology – agrofitness in complex with work therapy. The exercises were done in a proper way under the supervision of our coach Roman Shandyba. He watched over very carefully the distribution of workload.

When time to have a snack came, the floor was given to the best chef in Ukraine Ernest Ismailov with his assistant Svitlana Vorona. The most unruly workers were sent to prepare shashlik.

Everybody knew that our chef was very demanding. In addition to obligatory food tasting he was preparing the younger generation who would continue his work. So the young chefs amazed their teacher with new cookery inventions.

And, of course, food tasting…

And later we relaxed a bit…

Our meeting came to an end.

The show was prepared by:

Production director: Damiano Rizzi

Director: Natalia Onipko

Casting director: Oksana Atamanuk

Director of photography: Yana Savchuk

Equipment for Intensive Care Wards in Neurosurgery

The Zaporuka employees visit regularly the Pediatric Clinic of Neurosurgery and see the problem with which the doctors face there. One of such problems is the lack of medical equipment. That’s why sometimes the doctors have to move the artificial lung ventilation apparatus from the surgery room to the intensive care ward and back for them to be used by all the patients. Sometimes it happens that the doctors have to postpone an operation because a necessary device is used in the intensive care ward and it is impossible to operate without it!

We couldn’t be indifferent in such a situation and decided to help. Thanks to the financial support of the Italian association Un gesto per loro we purchased the following equipment for the intensive care wards for the total sum of 17 000 euro: the artificial lung ventilation apparatus with the compressor, the monitor of vital functions, five aspirators, pulse oximeter and intensive care unit for newborns.

We hope that the purchased equipment will facilitate the doctors work and save the childrens lives!

The Project “Hosting and Rehabilitation House” Launched

On the 1st of August the Hosting and Rehabilitation House for children ill with cancer and their families has been launched according to the plan.

At first some information about the House. The House is located in a very quiet residential area 15 minutes drive by bus (marshrutka 255) from the National Institute of Cancer. There are 4 rooms in the house where the families may live, several common rooms (a kitchen, a living room, a rehabilitation room, a recreation room), two bathrooms and Soleterre and Zaporuka office.  Besides, near the house there is a vegetable garden, a garden with a swimming pool and a covered space for cooking and having meals in the open air.

Children who are allowed to leave the hospital come to the House every day (except weekends). Here the children play with the educator in the fresh air, bathe in a small swimming pool, watch TV or just have good time in a calm environment. The parents who accompany the children have an opportunity to take shower or wash their stuff in the washing machine. Besides, the first families were hosted at the House.

“Smile on Two Wheels”

The volunteers of the Italian humanitarian association Soleterre Giovanni Rossi and Gigi Marangon went on bikes from Italy to Ukraine in the context of the project “Smile on the Wheels”. The goal of this motor-raid was raising money in order to help the Ukrainian children ill with cancer.

The bikers came to Kiev in the evening on July 17.  Immediately during the next day they went on excursion to the thematic arboretum “Mamayeva Sloboda” in which nature, architecture and traditions of Dnieper Ukraine were presented.

The Italian guests got an opportunity to get acquainted with living history visiting a traditional Cossacks’ settlement, the so called “Sloboda”, Cossack chiefs’ houses, a blacksmith’s shop, a pottery, an apiary, a water mill and many other interesting objects.

However, the most unforgettable was the visit to the church of the Saint Protecting Veil of the Mother of God: the priest blessed all the children and gave them crosses, incenses and icons.

We thank the direction of the “Mamayeva Sloboda” for an opportunity to go to the excursion free of charge!

On the second day it was planned to visit the Paediatric Clinic of Neurosurgery. While little patients were enjoying the performance prepared for them by the clowns, the Italian volunteers were looking around the hospital sharing their ideas how it could be improved in the future and assuring that they were ready to help in it. After the performance Gianni and Gigi took part in Nina’s activities: they were playing and communicating with the children. Later they invited the kids to ride their big bikes. The children were very happy!

For the third day the volunteers prepared an entertainment program for the patients of the paediatric department of the Institute of Cancer. Having disguised themselves in clowns’ costumes they were making the children laugh, treating them with sweets and doing creative activities with them – drawing and clay modeling. Then the children wanted to ride the bikes and get adrenalin from such riding – unforgettable impressions are guaranteed! Finally, the children were invited to a traditional Italian dinner with pizzas. Everybody had fun!

We express our sincere gratitude to the Italian volunteers!

Our Italian Friends Take Care about the Ukrainian Children

Once at the office we received a telephone call from Italy.  Our friends-volunteers were calling. In course of a long conversation it was clearly seen that in spite of the distance they were genuinely interested in our patients’ problems and took care about them.

The volunteers raised a necessary sum of money, purchased and sent 60 needles for biopsy of different types for the children of the National Institute of Cancer. It is really a significant aid and not only because the price of such a gift is more then 500 euro but also because it is impossible to buy such needles in Ukraine!

We thank the volunteers for their help!

Microscope for the Institute of Cancer

One more piece of pleasant news! Together with other sponsors our fund purchased a modern complex of equipment (a microscope with all the accessories) necessary for genetic diagnostics of malignant tumors by the FISH method. Our contribution makes up 180 651 grn.

People who don’t have medical education usually think that only doctors can influence the process of recovery. However, a successful treatment depends to a great extent on a laboratory department because a correct diagnosis means more than 50% of success in treatment.

This equipment was essential for the paediatric department of the Institute of Cancer to make correct diagnoses using methods of genetic diagnostics and choose a correct therapy in order to treat children ill with cancer in accordance with modern protocols.

We hope that this new modern microscope will help many children and will improve the doctors’ work conditions!

Renovated the Psychologists’ Room

It is a staff psychologist’s room at the paediatric department of the National Institute of Cancer.

Of course, it is hard to work in such conditions not only for a professional psychologist but also for the children and parents to share their emotions. Besides, there is no enough room to hold group art-therapy sessions which are very important for the children. It is because we decided to renovate this room.

Now the room is really so cozy as if at home! We changed a carpet on the floor, windows and a door, installed new plumbing equipment and electric devices, painted the walls warm colors! New beautiful furniture supplement the interior, they are a new big bookcase, a writing table, a table for group work with the children, a sofa, chairs. To create good work conditions at the psychologist’s office we spent 23 191, 81 grn.

Now children, parents and doctors can work here with the psychologist, or have a rest taking a cup of tea or coffee with which you will be treated!

And we don’t stop at this point!

Beds for Neurosurgery

Thanks to the sponsor support of the Ama Onlus and Plaza Onlus from Italy the Ukrainian Charitable Fund “Zaporuka” managed to purchase for the Paediatric Clinic of the Institute of Neurosurgery 6 beds Junior for children and teenagers, 10 beds for newborn babies and bed linen, the total cost of which is  46 746 grn.

These beds were purchased to substitute old battered ones. New beds meet all the standards and are more functional!  We hope that they will make the children’s stay at the hospital much more comfortable!

We express our sincere gratitude to Ama Onlus and Plaza Onlus on the behalf of our little patients!

Art-Therapy for Children Ill with Cancer

Nowadays one of the most important aspects of helping the families whose children are ill with cancer is a psychological adaptation of the children and their parents in the conditions of the hospital and after the discharge from it. Unfortunately, nowadays in Ukraine there are no enough qualified psychologists in the sphere of oncology. In the National Institute of Cancer the unique in
Ukraine social-psychological service helping the families with the children ill with cancer was created. It was organized by the charitable fund “Zaporuka” in collaboration with the Italian association “Soleterre”. The psychologists worked out the program of psycho-social adaptation of the children ill with cancer, teenagers and their families which was tested in the paediatric department of the National Institute of Cancer with the active participation of the direction of the Institute and its medical staff. Today the doctors are more and more interested in collaboration with the psychologists understanding the impact of the emotional and psychological state of the children and their parents on the process of the successful treatment and recovery.

International Childhood Cancer Day

On February 13, before the International Childhood Cancer Day which is marked on February 15, in the context of the Ukrainian actionI have hopethe inauguration of the exhibition collecting drawings made by the patients of paediatric oncohematological departments took place in the hall of the “Young Theatre”.

A hospital becomes a second home for ill children. In the walls of a public institution they have to fight for their lives every minute, suffer from terrible pain, feel sorry and understand their parents and appreciate every minute of recovery. These children grow up quickly and understand very quickly that healthy life is the most precious gift of fate. All these things are clearly seen in their drawings.

Yana Savchuk, the representative of the Ukrainian Charitable FundZaporuka”, spoke about the International Childhood Cancer Day during the press-conference dedicated to the action “There is hope”. In the world this date is marked  from 2003, in Ukraine this date is commemorated by various charitable and volunteer organizations during the last years.   Yana Savchuk emphasized that the International Childhood Cancer Day is not a day of desperation, it is a day of victory over this terrible disease!

Besides the drawings exhibition this year on February 15 the candle actionThere is hopewill take place at 17 p.m. in Kyiv, Lviv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Simferopol, Mykolaiv, Zaporizhya.

Every year in Ukraine there are one thousand new cases of childhood cancer. The majority of the children have three or four stage cancer when the chances to survive are minimal and the treatment last for years.  Evident symptoms of the disease appear too late, so the parents have to pay attention to the smallest changes in their children’s state of health.

Natalia Derbenyova, the chief of the paediatric department of the Kyiv oncological centre, said: “We don’t have any problem concerning examinations. If parents want their children to be examined they may come to us with or without an appointment card. It goes without saying that if cancer is diagnosed in the early stage, there are good chances for complete recovery”.

One more component of the wide campaign aimed at drawing attention of the public towards the problem of childhood cancer and the fact that this disease can be cured if it is diagnosed in time and treated in a proper way will be the photo exhibition “Vodka Against Cancer”. Explaining this quite strange name of the exhibition the representative of the association “Soleterre” Marco Zecchinato said that they met some children in Ukraine to whom before entering some medical institution the padiatricians prescribed them some compresses and in some cases the parents made vodka compresses. “That’s why with this name we wanted to draw attention of the public to the fact that it is better to refer to specialized medical centers”.

Marco Zecchinato also said that at the exhibition there would be 40 pictures made by Ugo Pannella in the paediatric department of the Institute of Cancer and in the Paediatric Clinic  of the Institute of Neurosurgery. The partners of Soleterre in organizing the exhibition were the Italian Embassy and the Italy-Ukraine Association of Entrepreneurs. His Excellency Italian Ambassador in Ukraine Pietro Giovanni Donnicci is expected to visit the inauguration.

The organizers of the action are the Ukrainian association of groups and persons that work with the children ill with cancer Zhyty Zavtra”, the Ukrainian Charitable FundZaporuka”, the International Charitable FundDar Nadii”, the Brotherhood of the Reverend Iona Kyivskyy.

LOVING PARENTS MUST KNOW IT

On February 15 during the candle action we launched the information campaign of the project “Let’s Anticipate the Project” regarding the early diagnostics of cancer among children.

Children from 0 to 18 years of age may fall ill with cancer.

In case of timely diagnostics cancer is a curable disease.

Symptoms of cancer, especially at early stages of disease, are not clear. Children almost don’t have complaints.  The parent must pay attention: all malignant tumors are characterized by the so called “tumor complex of symptoms”, these include:

  -    appearance of swelling or deformation in some part

       of the body;

  -     recurring fever without any other signs of flu;

         -     fatigue,  loss of appetite, vomiting;

      -     pain in bones;

      -     swollen abdomen;

      -     recurring abdominal pain;

   -     painless enlargement of one or two lymph nodes (double-

      sided  or one-sided);

   -     pale skin and mucous membranes;

   -     unexplained weight loss, excessive sweating;

   -     bleeding or excessive bruising (not caused by injuries);

   -     any pathologic discharge (blood, pus, phlegm etc.);

   -     dysfunction or malfunction of some organs (for example, being

      lame in case of affected bones or articulations);

   -     sudden loss of consciousness, unstable walk.

          Considerate parents also will notice changes in the

          usual behavior of their children:

     -   a child gets capricious;

     -    gets tired quicker than usually, forgets even about the

        favorite games.

“Let’s Make Holiday for Children”

During New Year and Christmas holidays the Charitable Fund “Zaporuka” in partnership with the TM “Antoshka” organized the action “Let’s Make Holiday for Children”, in the context of which the charity boxes were put in the children’s supermarkets to collect money.

The money collected in course of the action was used to buy gifts for the little patients of the paediatric department of the National Institute of Cancer and the Paediatric Clinic of the Institute of Neurosurgery.

We express sincere gratitude to everyone who took part in money collecting and to the direction of the supermarkets “Antoshka” that helped us to carry out this action.

Our Aid

During the last trimester of 2008 in the context of the project “Smile in the Ward” with the financial support of the Italian association Soleterre the Fund “Zaporuka” purchased and gave to the patients of the paediatric department of the Institute of cancer and Neurosurgical Paediatric Clinic the following: foodstuffs (dried fruit, seeds, nuts, sour milk products laktium and narine), the cost of which is 10 436 grn; medical consumables, the cost of which is 61 362 grn, necessary medicines - 38 314 grn.

Besides, we helped in purchasing endoprosthesis for Sergiy Godovanuk, a patient of the paediatric department of the Institute of Cancer, having paid for its production 7000 grn. Also we purchased the chair-wheel, the cost of which is 2 100 grn, for Olena Yathenko who underwent treatment in the Neurosurgical Paediatric Clinic.

Christmas from Sabrina Corabi

On December 27, 28 a Soleterre old friend – a well-known Italian actress Sabrina Corabi with her husband Mattia – came to Kiev. She decided to celebrate Christmas not in a family circle but together with the Ukrainian children who undergo treatment in the Institute of Cancer and Institute of Neurosurgery. Sabrina wanted these children to feel the joy of winter holidays in such a difficult period in their lives, that’s why she prepared not only gifts but also an interesting program – different contests, lotteries, games and watching cartoons, a true Italian meal with pizzas, a special performance from Santa Claus and visit to the cinema Magellan for the children and their parents. The children were very grateful to Sabrina and her husband Mattia for the sweets, toys, DVDs, a big TV-set for the department and the most important thing – for laughing, good mood and excellent time spent together.

The Ukrainian Charitable Fund “Zaporuka” and its beneficiaries express sincere gratitude to Sabrina and Mattia for their kind hearts!

St. Nicholas came to the Paediatric Department of the Institute of Cancer

He will come for sure! He will visit everybody!

He will leave any child’s heart alone with his/her dream. Because his name is St. Nicholas!
During the night St. Nicholas visited all the houses and put presents under the childrens pillows. He didn’t miss the paediatric department of the Institute of Cancer where all the children liked him and were longing for his coming.

St. Nicholas prepared a great surprise for the children. When they were sleeping, he entered the wards and put the gifts under their pillows. Those children who heard the steps near their beds were very surprised to see their gift-giver, they had an opportunity to communicate with him and thank for the gifts.

PAINTINGS for Windows

On Sunday, December 7 Olena Markaryan from the studio “Azur-Boutique” came to the dormitory of the Institute of Cancer. The artist offered our children to design paintings for the windows.

Olena brought with her all the necessary material for such kind of work – special paints, brushes, contours and sketches of the paintings.

The children were happy to create something new and unusual, so they started working eagerly. Everybody could choose the painting to his/her liking. At first the children had to make contours with the appropriate color, then to dry it with the hairdryer in order not to wait too long. Then they had to color the elements of the pictures. It was clearly seen that both the children and the parents who joined them liked that kind of work. Some of them created even two paintings. It was necessary to wait for one day before those paintings could be placed on a window or an aquarium or any other glass surface.

We wanted to take some paintings to the charitable sale at the festive fair “Generous St. Nicholas” but all the children preferred to keep their creations and place them somewhere at home, so we could only take pictures.

We would like to express our gratitude to the studio “Azur-Boutique” for the lessons conducted, particularly to Olena Markaryan and Olena Malik.

“Rainbow in the Ward”

Within the framework of the project “Rainbow in the Ward” 150 drain systems UnoVac were purchased for the patients of the paediatric department of the Institute of Cancer; these systems meet the annual demand of the department. As the professionals say, these systems are highly effective in wound cicatrization and in prevention infectious complications.

Besides, the paediatric department of the institute of Cancer received intravenous paediatric ports and consumables to them. The intrevanous port solves a problem of access to veins during long periods of treatment, diminishes the risk of infection as compared with other ways of enteral insertion, it is convenient for the patient (after the insertion of medicines a child can lead a normal life, take a shower, go in for sports because the port is unconspicuous and put under the skin) and for the medical staff.

The Ukrainian Charitable Fund “Zaporuka” and its beneficiaries express sincere gratitude to the Italian Charitable Organization “Children Future Projekt” for the financial support of the project!

“Aqua Vita” in the Department

Water is a natural source of life. It is a well known fact that 50 percent of the weight of the person’s organism is water.  That’s why it is very important to understand and to know what we drink.

Now in the paediatric department of the Institute of Cancer our little patients drink the water “Ukrainochka” which fits the criteria of the best drinking water according to the research of the Ukrainian Institute of Person’s Ecology. “Ukrainochka” is “Aqua Vita”, it is biologically active, the structure of it is the closest to the structure of water inside the cells.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Trade Mark “Ukrainochka”, LLC “Prospero” for providing the patients of the paediatric department of the National Institute of Cancer with this water. Thank you!
