About Our Foundation

THE UKRAINIAN NATIONAL CHARITABLE FUND ZAPORUKA helps children affected by cancer and their families.

Every year more than 1000 new cases of childhood cancer are registered in Ukraine. The experience of the Western European countries proves that 80% of children diagnosed with malignant tumor or leukemia have chances for recovery. In Ukraine these In Ukraine, these figures are significantly lower. The situation can be changed for the better only if we join OUR efforts.

THE FUND ZAPORUKA is a member of the INTERNATION UNION AGAINST CANCER (UICC), AND THE International Confederation of Childhood Cancer Parent Organisations (ICCCPO).

OUR ACTIVITIES:

CENTER FOR CHILDREN AFFECTED BY CANCER

In August 2009 our Fund opened the first Ukrainian CENTER for children affected by cancer. Cancer treatment may last from eight months to three years. All this time a child stays in the ward dreaming to leave the hospital at least for some time. For this purpose we created our Center where seven families with children affected by cancer live on a regular basis and some patients of the paediatric department of the Institute of Cancer spend their free time every day. The Center is an opportunity for children to play in the fresh air or in a specially equipped recreation room, to bathe in a swimming pool, to celebrate birthdays or other holidays in a circle of friends.

SMILE IN THE WARD

The project is implemented at the National Institute of Cancer and the Paediatric Clinic of Neurosurgery. Every year Zaporuka helps two thousand children. We were the first in Ukraine who organized a psychological service at the hospital, every day the Zaporuka employees offer services of a psychologist, a physiotherapist, an animator and a teacher free of charge. We have purchased modern medical equipment, furniture and other necessary things which provide comfort at the hospital; we have renovated wards and recreation rooms. Regularly we distribute medical consumable goods, medicines, foodstuffs and help low-income families.

EARLY DIAGNOSTICS OF CHILDHOOD CANCER

The majority of state programmes and projects realized by public organizations are not aimed at solving the problem of diagnosing cancer in time but at overcoming the consequences which appear because of a belated diagnosis. In most cases patients are hospitalized when they have third or fourth stage cancer. It is the indicative of parents’ referral to the specialists not in a due time and a low level of paediatricians’ knowledge about the issues of childhood cancer diagnosing.

If CANCER is diagnosed in time, it is a curable disease.

The main objective of the project is to raise oncologic awareness both among paediatricians and among parents. The project is realized under the auspices of the Ministry of Healthcare of Ukraine.

POSTREHABILITATION

After  finishing  treatment  a  family  with  a child affected by cancer requires social and psychological adaptation. That’s why Zaporuka carries out work with survivors and organizes self-help groups for parents.
